Cleanup Ordered at Marathon Mill

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has ordered cleanup to be completed at the former pulp mill in Marathon, Ontario. The mill is situated on Peninsula Harbour, the main harbour in Marathon. Peninsula Harbour is one of 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern, or environmental hotspots located around the Great Lakes, both in Canada and USA. The cleanup will build on previous environmental progress. A project to address Peninsula Harbour sediment contaminated with mercury and PCBs through a system of thin-layer sand and granular capping was completed last year (see pictures of a tour by Marathon residents during project implemention).
